Mariners activate catcher Mike Zunino from disabled list

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced Friday the following roster moves:
• Mike Zunino, C, recalled from rehab assignment at high-A Modesto and activated from 10-day disabled list.
• Mike Marjama, C, optioned to AAA Tacoma (postgame April 19).
Zunino (#3) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (5:05 pm PT) game at the Texas Rangers.
Zunino, 27, was placed on the 10-day DL on March 30, retroactive to March 27, with a strained left oblique muscle. He sustained the injury during the Mariners workout at Safeco Field on March 28. His stint on the disabled list included a rehabilitation assignment with high-A Modesto from April 16-19. In 3 games with the Nuts, he was 1x11 (.091) with 1 double, 1 run, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.
In 17 Cactus League games with Seattle this spring, Zunino hit .395 (17x43) with 8 runs, 2 doubles, 5 home runs, 12 RBI and 4 walks. In 2017, he hit .251 (97x387) with 52 runs, 25 doubles, 25 home runs, 64 RBI, 39 walks, a .331 on-base percentage and a .509 slugging mark in 124 games with Seattle. His 25 home runs ranked 3rd in the Majors among primary catchers and are the most in a single-season by a Mariners backstop. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound catcher was behind the plate for 994.0 innings last season, 2nd-most in the AL and 6th-most in the Majors. After a 12-game stint with AAA Tacoma (5/5-22), he hit .281 (84x299) with 24 home runs, 61 RBI and a .589 slugging mark in 95 games with the Mariners from May 29 through the end of last season.
The native of Cape Coral, Fla., has spent his entire seven-year professional career in the Mariners organization after being selected by the club with the 3rd overall pick in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Florida. In parts of 5 Major League seasons with the Mariners, he has belted 75 career home runs, 2nd-most in club history by a primary catcher (Dan Wilson, 88). This marks Zunino's second trip to the disabled list in his career and the first since sustaining a fractured left hamate bone in 2013 (on DL 7/26-9/2).
Marjama, 28, made his first Opening Day roster this season, including catching Felix Hernandez on Opening Night. In all, he appeared in 10 of the season's first 17 games, hitting .111 (3x27) with 3 doubles, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
Marjama was acquired by Seattle from Tampa Bay on Aug. 6, 2017. He made his MLB debut on Sept. 3, 2017 as a defensive replacement at catcher. He made his first MLB start on September 27, and was 2-for-4 with a double. He hit .167 (13x78) with 5 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 12 RBI in 21 games with AAA Tacoma after being acquired by Seattle and prior to his MLB recall. Mike started the season at AAA Durham, where he appeared in 72 games and hit .274 (72x263) with 16 doubles, 9 home runs and 51 RBI.
Marjama was originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of Long Beach State University. In seven minor league seasons, he is a .275 hitter (490x1783) with 112 doubles, 12 triples, 37 home runs and 240 runs batted in.
