Yuli & Lianet Gurriel Partner with Astros Foundation to Make Donation to Kids' Meals & Cristo Rey Jesuit School
HOUSTON, TX -- Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel and his wife, Lianet, today made donations to both Kids’ Meals and to the Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory of Houston. Their donation, which has been funneled through the Astros Foundation, will be used to purchase laptops and meals for Houston-area kids and teens.
“My wife Lianet and I are very grateful to support Houston area youth,” Yuli said. “We hope this donation will help them and their families as they go through these very challenging times.”
Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory of Houston is one of the few Greater Houston private schools that serve exclusively low-income students.
“Mr. Gurriel’s donation will support the purchase of 100 much-needed Chromebooks for our students, allowing the students access to instructional opportunities integrated into our curriculum as they worked from home during COVID-19 and as we move forward,” said Cristo Rey Jesuit President Paul Beck. “This incredibly generous technology donation will help ease the “digital divide” in low-income households, granting access to a 21st century education for our college-bound students, all of whom come from families with limited economic means. Thank you for this generous gift to our students.”
The mission of Kids’ Meals is to end childhood hunger in Houston by delivering free meals directly to the homes of hungry children.
“Kids’ Meals is so thankful for the partnership of the Houston Astros and Yuli Gurriel,” said Beth Harp of Kids’ Meals. “His donation will provide more than 22,400 meals to hungry children living in food insecure homes during this crisis. Thanks to their generosity, Kids’ Meals does not have to turn any children in need away, and will continue ensuring that children aren’t going to be hungry in our city!”
Gurriel is coming off what was an outstanding season on the field in 2019, as he reached career highs in home runs (31), RBI (104), slugging pct. (.541) and OPS (.884). He is one of several Astros players to make charitable donations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
