CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agent outfielder Rajai Davis (#26) to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.
Davis, 37, was a member of the 2016 American League Champion squad, leading the American League in stolen bases (43 in 49 attempts) and authoring one of the most dramatic home runs in the history of the franchise. The East Lyme, CT native spent the 2017 season between Oakland and Boston, hitting a combined .235 (56-for-336) with 19 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs, 20 RBI and 29 steals in 36 attempts. He began the year with the Athletics after signing with Oakland in January 2017 and was traded to the Red Sox prior to the August trading deadline and was a member of Boston's Division Series roster.
Rajai owns a ten-year Major League career batting average of .264 (1062-4023) with 218 doubles, 42 triples, 60 home runs and 373 RBI in 1318 games since debuting with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006, spending the last ten seasons in the American League. His 394 career stolen bases are third among active Major League players, placing in the top ten in the American League in steals eight times during his career. His lone career Postseason home run came in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series vs. the Chicago Cubs, an 8th-inning, 2-run shot that erased a 6-4 Cubs lead.
