Indians invite OF Matt Joyce & RHP Alex Wilson to Major League camp
The Cleveland Indians announced today the club has signed free agents OF MATT JOYCE (#24) and RHP ALEX WILSON (#37) to Minor League contracts with non-roster invitations to Major League Spring Training camp.
Joyce, 34, has spent the last two seasons with the Oakland Athletics, collecting a career-high 25 home runs and 58 extra-base hits in 2017 (68 RBI, .808 OPS, 141 games). Last season he was limited to 83 games due to a pair of stints on the disabled list with lower back soreness. He was a 2011 AL All-Star with the Tampa Bay Rays (career-high 75 RBI, 3.4 WAR) and recorded an .866 OPS for the 2016 Pittsburgh Pirates prior to signing with Oakland. The Tampa, FL native & Florida Southern alum began his professional career with the Detroit Tigers in 2005 (12th round) and was traded to the Rays prior to the 2009 season.
Wilson, 32, posted a 3.36 ERA (61.2IP, 50H, 23ER, 43SO, .223 avg) in 59 games with Detroit last season, limiting right-handed hitters to a .191 (25/131) average against. He was named Detroit's Pitcher of the Month in September and posted a 0.71 ERA (1ER/12.2IP) over his last 14 appearances to conclude the campaign. The Texas A&M alum began his professional career in 2009 in the Red Sox organization (77th overall pick, 2nd rd., First-Year Player Draft) and debuted with Boston in 2013. He is a veteran of six Major League seasons and over four campaigns with the Tigers he has posted a 3.20 ERA in 246 games (264.2IP, 246H, 94ER).
The Indians currently have 19 non-roster invitees coming to Major League Spring Training camp, which opens for pitcher and catchers on Feb. 12 in Goodyear, Arizona.
