Hunter Renfroe Named National League Player of the Week
San Diego Padres outfielder Hunter Renfroe has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending October 2nd. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
In six games last week, Renfroe hit .409 (9-for-22) with a National League-best 13 RBI. The rookie slugger also ranked among League leaders with three home runs (T-1st), a .909 slugging percentage (3rd), 20 total bases (4th) and six runs scored (T-4th).
On Tuesday, playing in just his sixth Major League game, Renfroe clubbed a pair of homers and collected seven RBI in a 7-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since 1920, only two other players have driven in as many runs in a single game within their first 20 games in the Major Leagues: Houston's J.R. Towles in 2007 (eight RBI in his sixth game) and San Francisco's Jarrett Parker (seven RBI in his 14th game). Renfroe followed the seven-RBI performance with a home run and four RBI in Wednesday's 6-5 victory over the Dodgers at Petco Park, becoming the first rookie to hit at least three homers and have 11 RBI over a two-game span since Fred Lynn - the first MVP an Rookie of the Year in the same season - clubbed three homers with 11 RBI from June 17-18, 1975 (Elias). Renfroe, who was San Diego's first round selection (13th overall) in the 2013 Draft, finished the season with four home runs and 14 RBI in just 11 games. This is his first career weekly award.
Other noteworthy performances last week included Javier Baez (.333, HR, 8 RBI, .500 SLG) of the Cubs; Curtis Granderson (.550, 7 R, 11 H, .650 SLG, .654 OBP) of the Mets; Arizona's Jean Segura (.435, 10 R, 10 H, 3 HR, .957 SLG, .519 OBP); and Cincinnati's Joey Votto (.419, 13 H, 3 HR, 8 RBI, .839 SLG, .438 OBP).
