Giants to Sponsor Two Liga Maya Teams in Mexico City
SAN FRANCISCO, CA/MEXICO CITY, MX – The San Francisco Giants announced today a multi-year sponsorship of two new Liga Maya teams during a visit to Mexico City and the MLB Cup.
Representing the Giants in Mexico City, on an advance visit prior to the Giants upcoming two-game series on April 29 and 30 against the San Diego Padres at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium, was Two-Time World Series Champion and Forever Giant Hunter Pence. The Giants/Padres games will mark the first-ever regular season series held in Mexico City in MLB history.
“Youth are the future of baseball and there is no better way to invest in the future of the game than to invest in the youth here in Mexico,” said Pence. “It is important to the Giants to give all kids the opportunity to play and learn the game regardless of socioeconomic background. This is why we are sponsoring these teams, providing kids from underserved communities with access to this great game.”
Liga Maya is a non-profit youth baseball league in Mexico City, comparable to Little League Baseball and Softball in the United States. Liga Maya utilizes six fields featuring seven categories, including children ages 5 to 18 years. Many alumni of Liga Maya reach the Mexican professional leagues and Major League Baseball.
The teams will be named _Gigantes_, consisting of boys and girls ages 9 to 12 years from Iztapalapa and Gustavo A. Madero. Each team will feature 15 kids for a total of 30 and will play in the 9-10 and 11-12 age categories. The Giants sponsorship will cover all expenses including league fees, travel costs, uniforms and equipment.
The Giants and MLB will also host kids and their chaperones from these new teams at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium during the series.
It has been a top priority for the Giants, throughout the planning for this historic series, to continue to build meaningful relationships with its Latino/Hispanic communities and fans both in the Bay Area and Mexico. This investment in a legacy project with Liga Maya in Mexico City is representative of the Giants commitment to fostering these relationships.
