D-backs select 8 players on the second day of MLB's First-Year Player Draft
PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) selected 8 players in Rounds 3-10 of Major League Baseball’s 2019 First-Year Player Draft. Overall, the D-backs have selected 10 college players and 5 high school players, with 8 pitchers (5 right-handed, 3 left-handed), 3 outfielders, 3 infielders and 1 catcher.
Yesterday, the D-backs made 7 selections: OF Corbin Carroll with the No. 16 pick (First Round), LHP Blake Walston with No. 26 (First Round), RHP Brennan Malone with No. 33 (First Round Compensation), RHP Drey Jameson with No. 34 (First Round Compensation), RHP Ryne Nelson with No. 56 (Second Round), LHP Tommy Henry with No. 74 (Competitive Balance B) and OF Dominic Fletcher with No. 75 (Competitive Balance B).
INF Tristin English (Round 3, Pick 93) | B/T: R/R | Age: 22 (5/4/97) | 6-3, 220 | Georgia Tech University
∙ As a redshirt junior in 2019, batted .346 (74-for-214)/.427 OBP/.710 SLG with 20 doubles, 2 triples, 18 home runs, 71 RBI and 58 runs scored in 57 games.
∙ He was named All-ACC First Team for 2 consecutive seasons (2018-19), a 2019 Perfect Game/Rawlings Preseason All-America First Team selection and 2018 Perfect Game/Rawlings Midseason All-America First Team selection.
∙ In 3 seasons with the Yellow Jackets (2016, ’18-19), hit .304 (190-for-624)/.361 OBP/.524 SLG with 53 doubles, 3 triples, 26 home runs and 161 RBI in 161 games.
∙ In 2 seasons on the mound (’18-19), went 4-4 with a 4.24 ERA (36 ER in 76.0 IP), 66 strikeouts and 19 walks in 29 games (9 starts)…in 2019, he made 15 relief appearances, going 3-0 with a 3.70 ERA (10 ER in 24.1 IP), .221 opponent average, 20 strikeouts and 7 walks.
∙ Attended Pike County (Ga.) High School, where he was named a Perfect Game First-Team All-American as a senior in 2015…also participated in the 2014 Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park.

INF Glenallen Hill Jr. (Round 4, Pick 122) | B/T: S/R | Age: 18 (9/30/00) | 5-9, 170 | Santa Cruz (Calif.) HS
∙ Hit .429 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 12 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 18 games for Santa Cruz High School.
∙ Was named a Perfect Game/Rawlings Preseason All-American entering the 2019 season.
∙ Son of former Major League outfielder Glenallen Hill, who played parts of 13 seasons with the Blue Jays (1989-91), Indians (‘91-93), Cubs (’93-94, 98-00), Giants (’95-97), Mariners (’98), Yankees (2000) and Angels (’01).
∙ Is committed to attend Arizona State University in the fall.
RHP Conor Grammes (Round 5, Pick 152) | B/T: R/R | Age: 21 (7/13/97) | 6-1, 200 | Xavier University
∙ As a junior at Xavier University in 2019, he was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team after going 5-5 with a 3.95 ERA (30 ER in 68.1 IP), .199 opponent average, 79 strikeouts and 46 walks in 14 starts for the Musketeers…at the plate, he served as the team’s designated hitter, batting .330 (75-for-227)/.428 OBP/.524 SLG with 14 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, 28 RBI and 54 runs scored in 58 games.
∙ Entered 2019 as the Preseason BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year.
∙ Was named the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player and BIG EAST All-Tournament Team honors as a freshman in 2017 as Xavier claimed the conference title and earned an NCAA Regional Berth.
∙ He was selected by the Orioles in the 35th round of the 2018 draft as a draft-eligible sophomore but did not sign.
∙ Is a native of McLean, Va., where he attended McLean High School…was a back-to-back state champion wrestler in 2015-16, and graduated as the school’s all-time wins leader in wrestling.
LHP Andrew Saalfrank (Round 6, Pick 182) | B/T: L/L | Age: 21 (8/18/97) | 6-3, 225 | Indiana University
∙ Earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Year honors as a junior for Indiana in 2019, going 8-1 with a 2.58 ERA (20 ER in 69.2 IP), 96 strikeouts and 23 walks in 14 games (11 starts)…he struck out 10+ hitters in 5 of his final 12 starts of the season.
∙ In 3 seasons for the Hoosiers, went 11-5 with a 3.71 ERA (60 ER in 144.2 IP), 186 strikeouts and 59 walks in 46 games (23 starts).
∙ A native of Hoagland, Ind., he attended Heritage High School, where he was a 2-time all-state selection in 2015-16 and owns the school record with 429 career strikeouts (218.1 IP).
INF Spencer Brickhouse (Round 7, Pick 212) | B/T: L/R | Age: 21 (4/10/98) | 6-4, 235 | East Carolina University
∙ As a junior at East Carolina in 2019, is hitting .330 (59-for-179)/.469 OBP/.615 SLG with 11 doubles, 2 triples, 12 home runs, 51 RBI and 52 runs scored in 52 games…the Pirates will play in a NCAA Super Regional in Louisville starting on June 7.
∙ He was named First-Team All-American Athletic Conference as a designated hitter and Second Team as a first baseman in 2019…in 2018, was also a First-Team All-AAC selection at DH as well as Most Outstanding Player at the AAC Championships…was also tabbed as a Freshman All-American by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and D1Baseball in 2017.
∙ Native of Zebulon, N.C., attended Bunn High School, where he hit .548 (136-for-248) over his 4-year career, the second-highest average in North Carolina high school baseball history...

OF Dominic Canzone (Round 8, Pick 242) | B/T: L/R | Age: 21 (8/16/97) | 6-1, 190 | Ohio State University
∙ As a junior at Ohio State in 2019, batted .345 (88-for-227)/.444 OBP/.620 SLG with 18 doubles, 2 triples, 16 home runs, 43 RBI and 66 runs scored in 63 games…was tabbed as possessing the Best Outfield Arm in the Big Ten by Baseball America.
∙ Earned First Team All-Big Ten honors this season after he led the conference in hits, runs scored, slugging pct. and total bases (158)…he was also selected to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
∙ Broke the program record by reaching base safely 59 consecutive games in 2019…he also ranked among the Buckeyes’ all-time single-season leaders in hits (5th), runs scored (6th) and home runs (7th).
∙ Was twice named Academic All-Big Ten (2018-19) and was a 3-time OSU Scholar-Athlete (2017-19).
∙ A native of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, he attended Walsh Jesuit High School, where he played both basketball and baseball.
RHP Bobby Ay (Round 9, Pick 272) | B/T: R/R | Age: 22 (5/28/97) | 6-3, 190 | Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
∙ As a redshirt junior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2019, he went 9-1 with a 3.27 ERA (31 ER in 85.1 IP), 74 strikeouts and 35 walks in 15 starts.
∙ He was named first-team All-Big West in 2019 after he finished among the conference leaders in wins (3rd), strikeouts (7th) and ERA (10th).
∙ A native of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., he attended El Toro High School, the same high school that produced Nolan Arenado/COL, Matt Chapman/OAK and Austin Romine/NYY.
C Oscar Santos (Round 10, Pick 302) | B/T: R/R | Age: 18 (9/24/00) | 5-9, 175 | PJ Education School (P.R.)
∙ Batted .360 with 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 2 home runs as a senior in 2019 at PJ Education School in Carolina, Puerto Rico…played primarily shortstop before converting to catcher last year.
∙ Was named a 2019 Perfect Game Preseason All-American from Canada/Puerto Rico and participated in the 2018 Perfect Game National Showcase at Tropicana Field.
∙ Committed to attend Florida Southwestern State College.
