OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland Athletics have traded IF Jorge Mateo to the San Diego Padres in exchange for a player to be named later.
Mateo, 25, was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent at the age of 17 by the New York Yankees. In his eight-year minor league career, he has hit .267 (751-for-2818) with 131 doubles, 76 triples, 52 home runs, and 302 RBI in 702 games. In 2019, Mateo hit .289 with a .834 OPS and a minor league-leading 14 triples in 119 games, all for the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators.
Originally acquired by Oakland in 2017 from the Yankees with Dustin Fowler and James Kaprielian in the Sonny Gray trade, Mateo has spent the last two full seasons in the A’s organization, splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A.
