Astros Select Janek In The First Round Of The MLB Draft

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros selected C Walker Janek from Sam Houston State University with the 28th overall pick in the first round.

Janek, 21, right-handed hitting catcher, batted .368 (81x220) with 55 runs, 15 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs, 58 RBI and a 1.194 OPS in 58 games for Sam Houston State this season. Janek was the Buster Posey Award winner this year, which is given to the top catcher in college baseball. This season Janek was also named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year and was an All- Conference USA First-Team selection.

Day 2 of the draft is set for Monday, which will begin at 1 p.m. CT and feature rounds 3-10. Day 3 is set for Tuesday and will feature rounds 11-20. The Astros will make Pendino available via Zoom after the Astros final selection on each day of the draft. The availabilities are expected to be somewhere between 4:45-5:45 p.m. CT.

Following the 2024 MLB Draft, the deadline for teams to sign their draft picks is August 1.
