Astros Make Eight Selections In The MLB Draft Today

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have selected nine players through the first two days of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft. Today’s portion of the draft included rounds 3-10 out of a scheduled 20. The final day of the draft will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT and will include rounds 11-20.

LOCAL TIES: The Astros have selected two players from the state of Texas. In the first round, the Astros selected C Walker Janek from Sam Houston State University. Janek graduated from Gregory-Portland High School in Portland, TX. The Astros also selected RHP Parker Smith from Rice University in the fourth round. Smith attended Bellaire High School in Houston, TX.

JUCO STANDOUT: The Astros selected SS Caden Powell from Seminole State College in the sixth round. Powell batted .502 with 17 doubles, seven triples, 32 home runs, 104 RBI, 16 stolen bases and a 1.649 OPS in 55 games this season. Powell was named the 2024 NJCAA Division I National Baseball Player of the Year.

FAMILY TIES: Houston selected OF Joseph Sullivan from the University of South Alabama in the seventh round. Sullivan is the grandson of 1971 Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback Patrick Sullivan.

CROP OF COLLEGIATES: The Astros have selected all nine of their draftees from the collegiate ranks. Houston has selected six pitchers and three position players in the first two days of the 2024 MLB Draft.
