A's Select Three Players on Day 1 of 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft
The Oakland Athletics selected three players on Day 1 of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft:
The Athletics selected Murray with the 9th overall pick in the first round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft, OF Jameson Hannah with the 50th overall pick in the second round, and SS Jeremy Eierman with the 70th overall pick in Competitive Balance Round B.
Murray, 20 (21 on Aug. 7), hit .296 (56-for-189) with 46 runs, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 10 home runs, 47 RBI, a .398 on-base percentage, and a .556 slugging mark in 51 games with the University of Oklahoma during the 2018 season. For more info on Murray, see attached release.
Hannah, 20, hit .363 (91-for-251) with 65 runs, 24 doubles, 3 triples, 6 home runs, 48 RBI and a .554 slugging mark in 59 games with Dallas Baptist during the 2018 season.
Hannah has been a two-time First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection and was selected to the All-MVC Defensive Team all three years. The Patriots' junior center fielder was also a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2016 and was tabbed the MVC Co-Freshman of the Year.
Over three seasons at DBU, he hit .341 (243-for-712) with 174 runs, 51 doubles, 9 triples, 19 home runs and 123 RBI in 176 games. His 243 career hits are the sixth most all-time in the program's NCAA Division I era dating back to 2004. He also ranks seventh in doubles (51), eighth in runs (174), and ninth in stolen bases (29) and base on balls (93).
During the 2016 summer season, the left-handed outfielder played 38 games for the Savannah Bananas out of the Coastal Plain League, where he hit .374 with 12 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 home runs, while collecting 37 RBI and stealing 11 bases. The following summer, he hit .265 with 7 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run with the Bourne Braves out of the Cape Cod League.
Prior to his college career, Hannah was a two-year letter winner at Flower Mound High School in Flower Mound, TX earning First Team All-District honors and nabbed a Texas Region All American Honorable Mention Selection by Perfect Game.
Eierman, 21, hit .287 (64-for-223) with 48 runs, 17 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs, 49 RBI, a .379 on-base percentage, and a .516 slugging mark in 56 games with Missouri State during the 2018 season.
He was a consensus preseason All-America choice this spring, and earned All-MVC honors for a second-straight year. The Warsaw, Mo., native became the Bears' first 40-40 club member with 43 stolen bases and 42 home runs for his MSU career.
Eierman is a two-time All-America selection, earning first-team honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game USA after the 2017 season. He became the third Bear in the last six seasons to be named the NCBWA's District VI most outstanding player and was a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award honoring the nation's top shortstop, as well as a semifinalist for the NCBWA's Dick Howser Trophy.
His father, John Eierman, was an outfielder in the Boston Red Sox organization. His brother, Johnny Eierman was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft.
The Draft will resume at 1:00 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday, June 5th, when selections will be made for rounds 3-10, with one minute intervals between selections. Day three of the Draft on Wednesday, June 6th will begin at 12:00 p.m. (ET), featuring picks in rounds 11-40, with no time delay between selections.
