GM Scott won't return to Mets (source)

NEW YORK -- Mets general manager Zack Scott will not return to the organization regardless of the outcome of his DUI trial, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The Mets, who have not confirmed the decision or made a formal announcement, informed Scott on Monday. He had been on administrative leave since shortly after his Aug. 31 arrest in White Plains, N.Y.

All told, Scott spent less than 10 months as GM and less than a year in the organization. Hired last December as an assistant GM, Scott took over the top baseball operations position when the Mets dismissed Jared Porter in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against him. Scott oversaw baseball ops from mid-January until the time of his arrest.

His trial is set for Dec. 8 in White Plains.

Initially, team president Sandy Alderson indicated that the Mets would wait until the conclusion of Scott’s litigation before making a decision on his future. However, the club reversed course Monday in informing Scott that he will not return. Alderson did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The Mets are searching for a new head of baseball operations, who will theoretically have the power to bring in staff members of their choosing. Currently, Alderson is leading baseball ops, but he intends to shift fully to the organization’s business side once a hire is made. Assistant GMs Bryn Alderson and Ian Levin also remain on staff.

Scott’s tenure as GM, while brief, included several notable moves, including the drafting of Kumar Rocker (who did not sign) and the July 30 trade with the Cubs for Javier Báez.
