CHICAGO -- White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada left with soreness in the back of his left leg during the ninth inning of Saturday's 9-6 loss to the Royals at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Moncada reached base during the three-run ninth when Kansas City reliever Ian Kennedy threw Moncada's one-out tapper in front of the plate past first base, with the error scoring two runs. Moncada made it to second with a slide, but he came up in pain and departed shortly thereafter and was replaced by Ryan Goins.

“It's the same thing. It's the irritation he has in the back of his leg,” said White Sox manager Rick Renteria. “Obviously, he felt it uncomfortable. It made no sense to keep him in there, so we pinch-ran for him.”

The White Sox evaluated Moncada on Saturday, and they'll see how he’s doing Sunday before the series finale against the Royals. Leg soreness has been an issue for much of the season for Moncada, who missed the start of Summer Camp after testing positive for COVID-19 in the intake process.

Renteria wouldn’t label the injury specifically as a hamstring problem.

“I would say in the general area. That would be accurate,” Renteria said. “I wouldn't call it a hamstring, but [in the] general area.”
