Yankees-Guardians game postponed Friday; doubleheader set for today
After taking their first loss in five days in a 5-2 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday, the Yankees will have to wait a little bit longer to get redemption.
Following a scheduled off-day on Thursday, New York will go another day without playing, as its Friday series opener in Cleveland was postponed due to rain.
As a result, the Yankees (10-3) will instead have a doubleheader against the Guardians (9-3) on Saturday in a battle of the teams with MLB’s two best records. Both squads are coming off seasons in which they missed the playoffs following a year in which both won division titles in 2022, when the Yankees beat the Guardians in a thrilling five-game ALDS. In fact, these teams have played each other in the playoffs three times since '17, with the Yankees winning every series, so there’s no shortage of bad blood.
Pertaining to this year specifically, though, the Yankees’ bread and butter has been a flair for the dramatic. New York is 5-0 in one-run games thus far, the most such wins in MLB. And such flair very well might be necessary against Cleveland, MLB’s only team to rank in the top five in both runs scored (5.75) and runs allowed (2.83) per game this year.

Because of the inclement weather, the series will now begin with a split doubleheader on Saturday, with the opener beginning at 12:10 p.m. ET before the previously scheduled game starting at 6:10 p.m. ET. For the Yankees, Clarke Schmidt (0-0, 4.66 ERA) will start in Game 1, and Cody Poteet will start in Game 2, making his first MLB appearance since July 2022 with the Marlins, following a recovery from Tommy John surgery.
For Cleveland, Carlos Carrasco (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will kick off the series by making his first home start for Cleveland since he played for the team from 2009-20, while Triston McKenzie (1-1, 4.00 ERA) will take the mound in the nightcap.
Because it’s a split doubleheader, fans will need tickets to each game if they want to see both contests. Those holding tickets to Friday’s matchup will be able to use them to enter the 12:10 p.m. ET game on Saturday. Likewise, to attend the evening contest, fans must have tickets for the Saturday 6:10 p.m. ET game.
Gates for the matinee are scheduled to open at 11 a.m. ET and will open again at 5 p.m. ET for the nightcap.
