NEW YORK -- Following Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays, the Yankees announced they were designating first baseman Chris Carter for assignment for the second time in 12 days.
New York will sign Ji-Man Choi to a Major League contract, and he will be selected to the Yankees' 25-man roster from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
In 62 games this season, Carter is batting .201/.284/.370 with eight home runs and 26 RBIs. He has 76 strikeouts and 20 walks.
He went 0-for-3 in Tuesday's loss and dropped a throw from shortstop Didi Gregorius at first base, though the play was officially ruled a hit.
Carter was first designated for assignment following the team's extra-inning victory over the Rangers on June 23 after he struggled offensively for much of the season.
But after yet another setback in Greg Bird's recovery from a right ankle bruise and a right hamstring injury to Tyler Austin, which sent him to the DL, Carter was brought back to the Yankees after accepting his assignment to Triple-A. No team claimed him off waivers when he was DFA'd the first time.
"Originally, our plan was for Greg Bird to be our first baseman," manager Joe Girardi said after Tuesday's game. "He's hurt, and we called up Tyler Austin, and hopefully we'd get something. He got hurt."
