NEW YORK -- The Yankees claimed left-hander Joe Mantiply off waivers from the Tigers on Tuesday and designated right-hander Branden Pinder for assignment.
Mantiply, 25, got his first taste of big league duty with five appearances for Detroit this past season, permitting five runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings (16.88 ERA).
He spent most of the season with Double-A Erie, where he was 3-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 49 appearances, and Mantiply also pitched with Triple-A Toledo. In 59 1/3 Minor League innings, Mantiply recorded 69 strikeouts, good for a 10.5 K/9 ratio.
Pinder, 27, made just one appearance for the Yankees in 2016 before sustaining a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Pinder was 0-2 with a 2.93 ERA in 25 appearances with the Yankees in 2015.
