Could No. 1 prospect debut in World Series?
Could Wander Franco be making his MLB debut in the World Series?
Well, that's extremely unlikely. Unfortunately. But the No. 1 prospect in baseball did share a photo on Instagram of his jersey with a World Series 2020 patch on the sleeve on Monday, immediately ramping up excitement that he could be added to Tampa Bay’s World Series roster. But early Tuesday afternoon, the Rays released their 28-man World Series roster, and he wasn't on it.
Franco is part of the club’s 40-man postseason player pool, and he spent the 2020 season training in Port Charlotte. The Rays have already had one rookie make his Major League debut this postseason. Pitcher Shane McClanahan debuted against the Yankees in Game 1 of the ALDS, becoming the first pitcher ever to debut in the postseason.
The Twins' Alex Kirilloff and the Padres' Ryan Weathers also made their debuts in the playoffs this year, but prior to 2020, only two players had ever played their first Major League games in the postseason.
If an injury happens and Franco somehow makes his way onto the Fall Classic roster and sees some game action, he would join the Royals’ Adalberto Mondesi as the only players to debut in the World Series.
