Houston's Alex Bregman became the first Astros farmhand to be named USA Today's Minor League Player of the Year on Tuesday.
The award, created in 1988, is voted upon by a 10-person panel at USA Today Sports. There is also a fan component to the voting.
Bregman beat out four other finalists: fellow Astros Minor Leaguer Joe Musgrave, Seattle's Tyler O'Neill, Colorado's David Dahl and Boston's Yoán Moncada.
Bregman, 22, joined the Astros in July after rocketing through Houston's system in his first season of professional baseball. The versatile infielder was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 Draft.
Bregman hit .306/.406/.580 with 22 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs and 61 RBIs in 80 games with Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Fresno. He also drew 47 walks while striking out just 38 times.
