PITTSBURGH -- The Cardinals optioned outfielder Tyler O'Neill to Triple-A Memphis to clear a roster space for right-hander Jack Flaherty, who started on Saturday against the Pirates at PNC Park.
O'Neill, who was acquired last July in a trade with the Mariners, played in six games for the Cards following his April 19 callup. He went 0-for-7 with one RBI at the plate.
O'Neill, the Cardinals' No. 4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, got off to a strong start this season in Triple-A. Through 12 games with the Redbirds, he hit six home runs with 18 RBIs with a 1.221 OPS.
