Reds claim outfielder Goeddel from Phillies

CINCINNATI -- The Reds announced on Wednesday that they claimed outfielder Tyler Goeddel off of waivers from the Phillies and optioned him to Triple-A Louisville.
Goeddel, 24, was designated for assignment by the Phillies last Thursday. The first player taken in the Rule 5 Draft during the 2015 Winter Meetings, he batted .192/.258/.291 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 92 games for Philadelphia last season.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Goeddel, the Reds transferred starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list. DeSclafani will be eligible for activation on June 1.
Although he played sparingly, Goeddel did figure prominently against the Reds on May 14 at Citizens Bank Park.
In the top of the ninth inning with two outs, Goeddel's perfect throw from left field to the plate nailed Eugenio Suárez for the final out of a 4-3 Phillies win. Suarez collided with the catcher on the play trying to score the tying run, but he was ruled out.

"He's an athlete, he ran well, he defended in several different positions," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "When we played him, he never seemed to play regularly, he was more of a bench player, as I remember it."
When Goeddel was cut in Spring Training, the Phillies likely planned to send him to Double-A to begin the season after multiple prospects overtook him to get spots in Triple-A.
