BOSTON -- After being optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Monday, pitcher Dillon Gee will make his first appearance as a member of the Twins' organization on Wednesday.
"[Gee is] going to pitch tomorrow," Twins manager Paul Molitor said on Tuesday. "Travel day today, so they didn't want to put him out there. We're not sure if they're going to have him start or piggyback with somebody. I would imagine he's good for at least 50 pitches, even after it's been 12-13 days. We'll see how that relates to a need we have in the short term or long term."
The right-hander, who signed a Minor League deal with the Twins last week, was called up over the weekend, but did not appear in a game. He was moved back to Rochester to make room on the 25-man roster for left-hander Héctor Santiago, who started Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Gee's last appearance came on June 14 when he was still with the Rangers. He allowed four hits and two earned runs over three innings in relief.
The question coming out of Gee's outing on Wednesday will be whether he'll be called back up to start in one of Minnesota's doubleheader games against the Royals on Saturday.
"His name has been up there as a guy with experience who can start," Molitor said. "I think the lack of work might nullify his chance a little bit in terms of being a starter for that day, but there's other considerations that you can look at in terms of options."
Molitor said he wouldn't rule out the possibility of Gee being called upon.
"I don't think I could eliminate it," he said. "It's probably a little bit of a long shot in the fact that his work has been so sparse, but we'll see how tomorrow goes."
Worth noting
Infielder Ehire Adrianza, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with abdominal issues last week, will start his rehab assignment with Rochester this week.
"We're going to try and get him out and get him an opportunity to play in at least three games," Molitor said. "Maybe Thursday, Friday and Saturday to get him some at-bats, hopefully, with the idea of getting him back activated by Monday."
