PHOENIX -- Rockies All-Star shortstop Trevor Story earned his Sunday treat on Saturday night.
In a 4-2 loss to the D-backs at Chase Field, Story’s eighth-inning leadoff drive to center field off reliever Yoan Lopez was his 18th home run of the season. That means he will receive his 18th pack of Oreo Double Stuf chocolate sandwich cookies, containing about 24 of the sweet treats.
“Those are probably my favorite little cheat,” Story said recently from Coors Field, where several packs were stored and stacked in his locker. “I just loved them as a kid, always have loved them. My dad loved them, so we would bond over Oreos.
“It’s a little thing. I get Oreos from … I’m not going to say who. But I get Oreos if I hit a home run.”
Story, like the modern athlete, pays close attention to preparation, workouts, rest and, of course, diet. So there are a lot of Oreo packs in his locker, and not many cookies are missing.
Alas, here comes Sunday -- which happens to be the Rockies’ last game before the All-Star break, and before Story takes off for Cleveland to represent the club for the second straight year in the All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. Of course, the cookies will taste much better if the Rockies can finish the pre-break schedule by ending their losing streak at five games.
“Sunday is the day for Oreos -- I’ll let it eat,” Story said.
Story isn’t stingy.
“They’re pretty much shared throughout,” he said. “I spread the wealth. Whoever wants one, they’re free to get in there.”
Still, since players pay the same attention to what goes into their bodies as he does, not many are missing.
But they won’t go to waste.
“I’ll be stocked up for the offseason,” he said.
