Top prospects show gas in scoreless outings

On a day in which baseball's No. 1 prospect was reassigned to the Minors, the top prospects who remain at big league camp were still able to command the spotlight.

MLB Pipeline's No. 15 overall prospect Sixto Sánchez dialed it up to 100 mph for the Marlins while No. 84 overall prospect Shane McClanahan touched 99 mph for the Rays on Monday. No. 25 overall Matt Manning unleashed his fastball, which flashed 97, for the Tigers.

Sánchez made his first career Spring Training appearance, after a visa issue and a false-positive COVID-19 test delayed his campaign. The Marlins' top prospect worked around a pair of hits and a walk for 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Sánchez utilized three ground balls, including two double plays to get out unscathed.

McClanahan pitched a perfect frame with three punchouts as he showcased his 70-grade fastball. The 23-year-old southpaw has now struck out seven straight batters, dating back to his spring debut on March 3. McClanahan was selected No. 31 overall in the 2018 Draft, and he has just 127 2/3 pro innings under his belt after not seeing game action last summer.

The 2016 first-rounder now has five strikeouts against one walk in six innings this spring.
