Friday's top prospect performers
Here's a look at Friday’s top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:
Brewers: Zavier Warren, INF (No. 14), High-A Wisconsin
Joey Wiemer, OF (No. 23), High-A Wisconsin
Everyone got their chance to shine in Wisconsin’s 13-1 thrashing of Great Lakes, but none shone brighter than Warren and Wiemer. Warren tallied his second four-hit effort of the season, legging out two doubles, driving his 12th homer of the year, scoring three runs and setting a new career high with five RBIs. It’s his third game of the year with at least two extra-base hits and the first in which he’s recorded three. The switch-hitter raised his High-A average up to .268 with a .744 OPS.
Wiemer enjoyed a two-homer, three-RBI day for the Timber Rattlers, his second multihomer game of the season. After hitting at a decent .276 clip in 75 games with Low-A Carolina, the 22-year-old has torn it up for Wisconsin, batting .350 with a 1.191 OPS in 31 games. Wiemer has shown off his pop at both levels, blasting 25 homers in his debut season -- 13 in Low-A and 12 in High-A. Through 106 games across both levels, he’s stolen 30 bases, driven in 73 runs and walked 60 times. Brewers prospect stats »
D-backs: Ryan Bliss, SS (No. 14), Low-A Visalia
In just his 37th professional game, Bliss hit for the ever-elusive cycle in Visalia’s 7-3 win. He got all the hard parts out of the way first, smacking a home run on the fifth pitch of the game, doubling in the third and then racing around for his first Minor League triple -- a hit that happened to plate the go-ahead run for the Rawhide -- in the sixth. After grounding out in the seventh, he was due to bat fourth in the ninth and the first two batters struck out. But when the next batter reached on an error, Bliss worked a 3-1 count and grounded a single to center to complete the feat. Drafted 42nd overall in 2021, it was his first career four-hit game. Mariners: Brandon Williamson, LHP (No. 7), Double-A Arkansas
Williamson notched his fourth double-digit strikeout game of the season as he fanned 10 over six strong innings. The 23-year-old allowed six hits and walked one, but surrendered only one run after giving up a double and a run-scoring single to start the second inning. Williamson was able to limit the damage over his next three innings, fanning at least one batter in each frame. The 6-foot-6 southpaw has now racked up 153 strikeouts in 98 1/3 innings across two levels this year. Mariners prospect stats »
Mets: Mark Vientos, 3B (No. 6), Triple-A Syracuse
Since he was called up to Triple-A on Sept. 9, Vientos has done nothing but hit. The 6-foot-4 slugger went 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, two runs scored and finished a triple shy of the cycle for Syracuse in its victory over Worcester. Vientos is now 5-for-7 to start his Triple-A career and his opposite-field moonshot was his first career homer at the level. The Florida native has been flexing his power all season long with 23 home runs, 17 doubles and a .598 slugging percentage in 74 games. Mets prospect stats »
Orioles: Coby Mayo, 3B (No. 17), Low-A Delmarva
Drew Rom, LHP (No. 26), Double-A Bowie
Mayo drove in four of Delmarva’s 13 runs in its win over Salem, bashing a homer, his ninth of the year, smacking a double and drawing a walk as part of a 3-for-4 effort. The 2020 fourth-rounder has notched two three-hit games in a row and has nine multihit efforts in 13 September games to raise his Low-A average from .255 on Sept. 1 to .340 as of Sept. 17. The 19-year-old has as many RBIs (24) as strikeouts and has drawn 16 walks in 25 games for Delmarva.
Rom fired what was easily the best outing of his career. The southpaw tossed five perfect innings and fanned seven for his first hitless effort of the year and his eighth in which he didn’t issue a free pass. Rom’s efficient work was evident as he threw 41 of his 54 pitches for strikes and worked only one three-ball count. The 21-year-old has been untouchable in three September starts, allowing zero runs and surrendering just five hits and one walk in 14 innings while striking out 18. Rom lowered his Double-A ERA to 3.83 in eight outings (six starts). Orioles prospect stats »
Pirates: Miguel Yajure, RHP (No. 24), Triple-A Indianapolis
Yajure has battled injuries all year and for the first time since May, he went six innings in a start. The 23-year-old tossed his first scoreless effort of the season, allowing four hits and a walk while fanning six. After surrendering a single and a walk in the first inning, Yajure retired the next eight batters and scattered three hits across his final three frames. In nine Triple-A starts, the righty has pitched to a 3.09 ERA in 43 2/3 innings with 40 punchouts. Pirates prospect stats »
Reds: Jose Torres, SS (No. 22), Low-A Daytona
For the second consecutive game, Torres both homered and tripled in the same game. Only this time, he did so in just two at-bats in the first game of a doubleheader. The 2021 third-round Draft pick drove in two runs and added a walk to his 2-for-2 effort, raising his batting average to .313 and his OPS to .975 through 22 games with Daytona. He’s smacked five homers, tripled four times and drove in 17 runs in 25 games across two levels. Reds prospect stats »
Twins: Aaron Sabato, 1B (No. 16), High-A Cedar Rapids
Cole Sands, RHP (No. 19), Double-A Wichita
Sabato has been on a power tear since the beginning of August and continued his hot streak with his fourth multihomer game of the season. Both of the powerful righty’s homers were solo shots, his 17th and 18th of the year. Since the calendar flipped to August, Sabato has smacked 12 homers across Low-A and High-A. Since his promotion to Cedar Rapids, Sabato is slashing .232/.368/.580 with a .948 OPS in 20 games.
Sands registered his second consecutive scoreless outing by scattering three hits, over five innings, striking out four and walking three. The 24-year-old has been stellar throughout September, carrying a 1.23 ERA over four starts and 22 innings. Sands has impressed all season as well, allowing no runs in seven of his 17 starts and posting a 2.46 ERA with 96 strikeouts over 80 1/3 innings. Twins prospect stats »
White Sox: Andrew Dalquist, RHP (No. 6), Low-A Kannapolis
Dalquist fired five one-hit innings in his longest and first scoreless outing since he pitched five frames on Aug. 21. Though he walked three and struck out only one, he tossed 44 of his 72 pitches for strikes and worked out of early trouble in the second inning, inducing a double play to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam. In 23 starts with Kannapolis, the 20-year-old pitched to a 4.99 ERA with only one home run allowed in 83 innings. White Sox prospect stats »
Yankees: Hayden Wesneski, RHP (No. 15), Double-A Somerset
In his first scoreless start in exactly one month, Wesneski was lights-out. Coming off an outing where he struck out 14 but surrendered one run on a homer, the 2019 Draft pick made sure to keep the runs to a minimum as he tossed seven innings of three-hit ball. After hitting a batter on the third pitch of the game, Wesneski retired the next eight batters and worked around a two-out, two-on threat to keep the shutout intact. He lowered his Somerset ERA to 4.01 with 92 strikeouts in 83 innings. Yankees prospect stats »
