Tuesday's Tigers-White Sox game postponed
CHICAGO -- Both White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez and Detroit hurler Matthew Boyd warmed up Tuesday night as if they were getting ready for a 7:10 p.m. CT first pitch at Guaranteed Rate Field.
And then the rain started to fall, just as it fell Sunday when the White Sox-Twins game was delayed for close to three hours. Tuesday’s series opener eventually was postponed, with the contest to be made up on Friday, Sept. 27, as part of a straight doubleheader beginning at 3:40 p.m. CT.
The originally scheduled contest will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the opener.
“It was difficult. You guys saw both sides get ready to go. Skies open up and nobody can control Mother Nature,” White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. “We were expecting we were going to start and there was going to be something later on in the ballgame, but we didn’t anticipate that.”
Dylan Cease, baseball's No. 18 overall prospect per MLB Pipeline, will make his Major League debut during Game 1 of Wednesday’s split doubleheader, beginning at 1:10 p.m. CT, weather permitting. Ross Detwiler will pitch Game 2. The Tigers will send left-hander Daniel Norris to the hill for Game 1, with southpaw Tyler Alexander making his MLB debut in Game 2.
Renteria said Tuesday that the club was still discussing whether Lopez simply will pitch Sunday against the Cubs to close out the first half or whether they will alter the rotation after Wednesday. Lucas Giolito would need to pitch Saturday (as opposed to Sunday) against the Cubs in order to pitch in the All-Star Game on Tuesday in Cleveland.
Fans with game tickets, parking coupons and Huntington Bank Stadium Club passes to the originally scheduled game on September 27 can attend both games with their ticket and parking pass. Parking lots will open at 1:40 p.m. and gates at 2:40 p.m.
Game tickets, parking coupons and Huntington Bank Stadium Club passes for Tuesday's postponed game (July 2) cannot be used for the doubleheader on September 27 unless they are exchanged at the box office prior to entry. Fans can apply the value of those tickets, parking coupons and Huntington Bank Stadium Club passes to any future regular season White Sox home game.
All exchanges must be done at the Guaranteed Rate Field box office during regular business hours. Tonight marks the third postponement between the White Sox and Tigers this season, including April 20 at Comerica Park and April 27 at Guaranteed Rate Field. The clubs are scheduled to play split doubleheaders tomorrow and August 6 in Detroit.
