ANAHEIM -- Stephen Piscotty was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right knee sprain, a day after the A's outfielder's night was cut short after sustaining the injury in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Angels at Angel Stadium.

Infielder Franklin Barreto was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.

After roping a two-out single to center field off the Angels' Trevor Cahill in the sixth inning, Piscotty attempted to stretch the hit into a double and slid awkwardly into second base to avoid a tag from Luis Rengifo. Piscotty immediately put his hands over his head in pain as he remained on the ground with his feet off the bag, allowing Rengifo to tag him out -- but the attention quickly turned to the right fielder’s health.

A’s manager Bob Melvin and the club’s training staff rushed onto the field, and several members from both teams huddled around second base in concern. Piscotty remained on the ground for a couple of minutes before being helped up to his feet. Unable to put much force on his right leg, Melvin and third baseman Matt Chapman helped Piscotty to the A’s dugout, where he was met by trainers and helped down to the clubhouse.

The A’s are expected to have a better idea of the severity of the knee sprain after Piscotty undergoes an MRI on Sunday.

Robbie Grossman came off the bench to take Piscotty’s spot in the lineup and moved over to left field to begin the bottom of the sixth. Piscotty had been relatively healthy since joining the A’s. He has not been on the IL since going down with a groin injury in July 2017 while a member of the Cardinals.

“He’s been through a lot, in general, the last year and a half,” Melvin said. “He’s had the melanoma in the ear and obviously with this now, he went through a lot last year. Everybody feels bad for him.”
