Sixto shut down; Marlins 'to monitor the situation'

JUPITER, Fla. -- Marlins right-hander Sixto Sánchez has been shut down from throwing, general manager Kim Ng announced on Monday morning.

MLB Pipeline's No. 41-ranked prospect underwent an MRI after experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder, which he had surgery on last July 20 to repair a capsular tear and clean out the back side. According to Ng, everything from the procedure is intact.

"We're just going to see how it goes, and we're just going to monitor the situation," Ng said.

On Nov. 28, the Marlins posted a video on their YouTube channel, where Sánchez discussed his rehab process and a "new version" of himself. He was expected to be full go at Spring Training and compete for a spot in the rotation. Ng said one of the more difficult aspects of the lockout was being unable to see players rehabbing in person.

"Well, in my mind, I believe I'm 100%," Sánchez said via subtitles at the time. "Thank God. Thanks to the hard work I've been doing every day at the training room and weight room. I feel 100%, and you will see a new version of Sixto Sánchez."

The 23-year-old posted a 132 ERA+ and triple-digit velocity across seven starts upon his MLB debut in 2020, then didn't throw a pitch for Miami because he felt discomfort in a simulated game on March 31, 2021. His rehab stalled off and on until he underwent the surgery four months later.

Entering Spring Training, Miami's rotation consists of ace Sandy Alcantara, Pablo López, NL Rookie of the Year runner-up Trevor Rogers, Jesús Luzardo and Elieser Hernandez. MLB Pipeline's No. 29 overall prospect Edward Cabrera hasn't reported to camp, according to a source.
