The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 22) with a low back strain and recalled left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan from the South Bend Alternate Site.

Ryan is available for today’s 1:20 p.m. CT game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.

Ryan, 29, is in his fourth season with the Cubs organization after signing with the club on December 29, 2017. The lefthander appeared in 18 games in 2020, going 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA (9 ER/15.2 IP), four holds and one save. In 2019, Ryan went 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA (24 ER/61.0 IP) and 14 holds while limiting left-handed hitters to a .226 average (21-for-93) in a career-high and team-leading 73 games.

An original 12th round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2010, Ryan owns a career 13-8 record with a 3.87 ERA (88 ER/204.2 IP) in 177 appearances (seven starts). He has stranded 81 of 114 inherited runners, walked 79 and struck out 139 batters.

Miller, 30, has allowed seven runs in 2.0 innings over three relief outings with the Cubs this season. The right-handed pitcher signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on February 12 after spending the entire 2020 season with Milwaukee at their Alternate Training Site. Miller is 38-56 with a 4.18 ERA (353 ER/760.1 IP) in 153 career appearances (132 starts).
