San Diego mayor Todd Gloria announced in a social media post on Wednesday night that he has "started the process" of renaming one of the streets leading to Petco Park "Peter Seidler Way" after the late Padres chairman.
Seidler passed away last November at the age of 63 after battling an illness. The grandson of longtime Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, Seidler co-founded a successful investment group that eventually purchased the Padres in 2012. In 2020, he became chairman, and within two years, San Diego reached the National League Championship Series for the first time in 24 years.
Outside of baseball, Seidler was heavily involved in the local community, particularly when it came to helping the homeless. In 2017, he formed “The Tuesday Group” -- a collection of civic leaders who met weekly to address homelessness in San Diego. He was also one of two private citizens on the City of San Diego’s leadership council for its homelessness reduction plan.
In his social media post, Gloria highlighted Seidler's charitable efforts, writing that he "lived his values and acted on his compassion for people experiencing homelessness every single day."
