The Mets are being followed closely this offseason because they are expected to be major players in free agency.

They made a minor move Friday, when they announced they signed right-hander Sam McWilliams to a one-year contract. MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reports the deal is worth $750,000.

McWilliams, 25, is 30-35 with a 3.85 ERA in parts of six Minor League seasons with the Phillies, D-backs and Rays. He went 7-9 with a 4.10 ERA in 26 appearances (19 starts) last season with Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham in 2019 -- making the Southern League All-Star team -- before joining the Rays’ 60-man player pool this season.

The Phillies selected McWilliams, who is 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds, in the eighth round of the 2014 Draft. They traded him to the D-backs in November 2015 for right-hander Jeremy Hellickson. Arizona later traded McWilliams and left-hander Colin Poche to complete their deal for Steven Souza Jr. in May 2018.

McWilliams was the only player the Mets added to the 40-man roster. Players added Friday are protected from the Rule 5 Draft in December..
