Dodgers add LHP Yarbrough to bolster staff

The Dodgers made another move to bolster their pitching staff right before Tuesday's Trade Deadline, acquiring left-hander Ryan Yarbrough from the Royals in exchange for Minor League first baseman Devin Mann (L.A.'s No. 29 prospect) and 19-year-old shortstop Derlin Figueroa.

Yarbrough missed 55 games after being struck in the face by a line drive, but he’s been nothing but excellent in his return. The 31-year-old had a 2.19 ERA in four starts during the month of July, allowing just six runs in 24 2/3 innings with 15 strikeouts and just two walks. He has a 4.24 ERA this year, but as a starter, he’s pitched to a 3.08 ERA.

The Royals signed Yarbrough to a one-year, $3 million deal this past offseason after he was non-tendered by the Rays, and he still has one more year of arbitration eligibility before hitting free agency. He has ample experience starting and relieving, including pitching behind an opener.

Yarbrough is a low-velocity, high-ground ball pitcher with his fastball averaging just 87 mph and his curveball clocking in at 71 mph. But he’s been able to get outs with both, along with his cutter. He has just a 4.2% walk rate this year, along with a 38.2% ground-ball rate.

The Dogers previously acquired right-handed starter Lance Lynn and righty reliever Joe Kelly from the White Sox last week.
