Canó's time in San Diego over; Mazara joins Padres

Less than three weeks after arriving in San Diego, Robinson Canó’s time with the Padres has come to an end.

The club optioned Canó to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, but he declined the request and became a free agent. To replace Canó on the roster, the Padres selected outfielder Nomar Mazara.

Designated for assignment by the Mets on May 2 and released just a few days later, Canó signed with the Padres on May 13. The club hoped the eight-time All-Star might, at the very least, give it a boost against right-handed pitching. But in 12 games in San Diego, he’s slashed .091/.118/.091. He’s drawn one walk compared to 10 strikeouts, and his -0.9 FanGraphs WAR is the second worst among Major League position players.

Earlier this season, Canó batted .195/.233/.268 in 12 games with the Mets, who owe him over $40 million from the remainder of the 10-year, $240 million contract he signed with the Mariners. Should this be the end for Canó, he'll finish his career with a .301/.351/.489 slash line and 335 home runs.
