The Astros have placed Roberto Osuna on outright waivers, according to a report from The Athletic's Jake Kaplan on Thursday. The team hasn't confirmed the news.
Osuna only pitched in four games this season before he was shut down with right elbow soreness at the beginning of August. Earlier this month, FOX 26 Houston's Mark Berman reported that Osuna's initial diagnosis called for Tommy John surgery, but it was later revised to a forearm strain that required a four-week shutdown.
In 2019, the right-hander led the American League with 38 saves and had a 2.63 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 66 relief appearances. Houston acquired Osuna in a trade with the Blue Jays in 2018, while he was serving a 75-game suspension for violating MLB's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy.
The 25-year-old Osuna would have been a non-tender candidate for the Astros, considering his elbow injury and third-year arbitration status.
If Osuna clears waivers, he can elect to become a free agent.
