Former MLB reliever Reyes Moronta, who pitched for four teams during his six-year Major League career, died in a traffic accident Sunday night. He was 31.
Moronta spent most of his tenure with the Giants, debuting with the club in 2017. The right-hander was a key arm out of San Francisco’s bullpen, pitching to a 2.65 ERA in 136 relief appearances for the team until 2021.
Moronta signed a free-agent deal with the Dodgers before the 2022 season and was claimed off waivers by the D-backs on Aug. 22, 2022. He had a 4.30 ERA in 39 games between the two teams in 2022, picking up two of his three career saves with Arizona.
Moronta was picked up by the Angels in May 2023, making two appearances before being designated for assignment. He had pitched in 19 games this season for the Bravos de León in the Mexican League.
A native of Santiago in the Dominican Republic, Moronta signed with the Giants back in 2010 as an international free agent.
