Reds sign 17th overall Draft pick McLain

It took a couple of weeks, but the Reds and their first-round pick put pen to paper, as the club announced on Monday that it had signed Matt McLain, the No. 17 overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft.
McLain, a 21-year-old shortstop out of UCLA, signed just days away from the Aug. 1 deadline. The slot value for the 17th overall pick was $3.61 million, but as reported by MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis, McLain signed for $4,625,000.
McLain was originally taken in 2018 with the 25th overall pick by the D-backs, but he instead honored his commitment to play for the Bruins. After three years of experience at the collegiate level, McLain entered the 2021 Draft ranked as the No. 12 prospect by MLB Pipeline following a junior season that saw him hit .333 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs.
With McLain’s signing, the Reds’ only unsigned pick is 11th-rounder Shawn Guilliams.
