Reds set 2022 Minor League coaching staffs
CINCINNATI -- The Reds on Tuesday announced their 2022 managers and coaching staffs for their Minor League affiliates.
Here is a look at each level:
Triple-A Louisville
Longtime member of the organization Pat Kelly is back as manager. Kelly earned his 2,000th victory as a skipper last season. He has been with the Reds in some capacity since 2007 as a manager at multiple levels and had two stints as the bench coach for the Major League club, in ‘07 and 2018.
Now in his 10th season with the organization, Dick Schofield is back as Louisville’s bench coach. He spent 2018-19 with the team in the same position and was to be Daytona’s manager before the 2020 Minor League season was canceled. In 2021, he served as a development coach for Daytona.
Alex Pelaez is back for his 14th season in the organization and second at Louisville.
Seth Etherton is in his second season with Louisville and seventh as a coach in the organization. Mike Jacobs has joined for his first year with the club as the game-planning and outfield coach. Jacobs, a former big league player for seven seasons, spent the previous five years working in the Marlins’ player development system.
Double-A Chattanooga
Jose Moreno was named the Lookouts’ new manager, replacing Ricky Gutierrez. Moreno spent 2021 as the manager at High-A Dayton and was assigned to be the manager of the Rookie-level Arizona League Reds in 2020.
Rob Wooten is back for his second season as the team’s pitching coach. Eric Richardson is the new hitting coach, and former Reds bullpen catcher Nate Irving has become the new game-planning and catching coach.
High-A Dayton
Bryan LaHair replaces Moreno as manager after he spent 2021 as skipper of the Reds’ Arizona Complex League team. LaHair is in his fourth year in the organization.
Brian Garman is back for his third year as Dayton’s pitching coach, and Daryle Ward has returned as the hitting coach. Ward, in his seventh season with the organization, was Dayton’s hitting coach last year and from 2017-18 and Chattanooga’s hitting coach from 2019-20.
Former Major League infielder Juan Samuel has joined the organization as Dayton’s bench coach after he spent last season as bench coach for Monclova in the Mexican League. Samuel, who played 16 seasons in the Major Leagues, has been a big league coach for the Tigers, Orioles and Phillies and served as Baltimore’s interim big league manager in 2010.
Low-A Daytona
Gookie Dawkins is in his second season as the club’s manager and eighth with the organization.
Darryl Brinkley is back for his seventh season in the organization and his second as Daytona’s hitting coach. Todd Naskedov is the new pitching coach, with Lenny Harris serving as bench coach after he was a development coach in Chattanooga last year. This is Harris’ sixth year in the organization as a coach.
Rookie ACL Goodyear
Julio Morillo, who was a development coach for the team last season, was promoted to manage in 2022 and is in his third season as a coach. Morillo previously spent five seasons as a baseball operations assistant on the big league club and served as the team’s Spanish translator.
Elmer Dessens and Fred Corral are co-pitching coaches. Jason Broussard will serve as the hitting coach, Anthony Manuel as the bench/infield coach and Luis Terrero as the bench/assistant hitting/outfield coach.
Rookie DSL Reds
The Reds’ Dominican Summer League team will be managed by Gustavo Molina, with José Leon as the hitting coach, Juan Ballera as the bench/catching coach and Luis Hernandez as the infield coach. A pitching coach has not been named.
