July 20: LHP Brent Suter (partial tear of left teres major muscle) placed on 15-day injured list; RHP Casey Legumina recalled from Triple-A Louisville
Following his early exit from Friday’s night loss to the Nationals, Suter underwent an MRI on Saturday which revealed a partial tear of the left teres major muscle. The southpaw said he woke up ahead of Saturday’s game feeling sore but was not expecting for the results to show a tear.

“When I do motions or when I pull or pick up stuff or have my arms hanging, I can feel it, but it wasn’t crazy pain,” he said.

Suter will be shut down from throwing for the next four to six weeks to allow the tear to heal. The hope is for him to rest, then begin building back up so that he can return to playing with the team before the season ends.

Suter exited the series opener against the Nationals after just two-thirds of an inning due to left shoulder tightness. He said he began to experience “a knot” in his lat during his warm up in the bullpen.

Legumina was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

July 19: OF Stuart Fairchild (spinal disc injury) activated from the 10-day injured list; INF Edwin Ríos designated for assignment
Fairchild was activated from the injured list and began the second half of the season batting ninth in the Reds’ lineup against the Nationals on Friday. After sustaining a spinal disc injury, the center fielder progressed just as expected and made his return on the day it was originally planned.

“It’s great to be back,” Fairchild said. “I missed it. I missed the team and missed competing. It’s great to be back, and [I’m] looking forward to seeing what we can do the rest of the season and make that playoff push.”

To make room on the roster, Ríos was designated for assignment. The infielder made five appearances for Cincinnati, going 1-for-9 (.111) and scoring one run.

10-DAY/15-DAY IL

LHP Brent Suter (partial tear of left teres major muscle)
Estimated return:
Late second half of season
An MRI on July 20 revealed Suter sustained a partial tear of his teres major muscle while warming up in the bullpen ahead of his relief outing against the Nationals on July 19. He will be shut down from throwing for four to six weeks before beginning rehab.

Suter exited the series opener against Washington after just two-thirds of an inning due to left shoulder tightness. He said he began to feel “a knot” in his lat during his warmup. The coaching staff noticed his lower pitching velocity and decided to take him out of the game as a precaution. (Last updated: July 20)

OF TJ Friedl (right hamstring strain)
Estimated return: July 26
Friedl is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on July 21, and the goal is for him to join the Reds for the Tampa Bay series the next week. He took live batting practice on July 20.

Friedl was injured making a diving catch vs. the Pirates on June 17, and he went on the IL for the third time this season on June 24 after trying to play through it. (Last updated: July 20)

RHP Carson Spiers (right shoulder impingement)
Estimated return: July 28
The Reds placed Spiers on the 15-day injured list on July 13 with right shoulder impingement. Spiers earned the win the previous night, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings while striking out a career-high nine. Despite feeling some fatigue in his right shoulder, Spiers fanned the first six batters he faced.

“We're hoping to have him back 15 days from now,” manager David Bell said. “It’s probably good to happen [now], just help him get ready for the second half and get reinforcements for us.” (Last updated: July 13)

RHP Graham Ashcraft (right elbow strain)
Estimated return:
TBD
Ashcraft’s July 8 optioning to Triple-A Louisville was voided on July 10 after tests revealed the issue with his elbow. He had felt some tightness, and it was decided to have it checked out by a doctor. He will have a PRP injection in his elbow, and will be shut down from throwing for two weeks before a prognosis for his return is determined. (Last updated: July 10)

C Luke Maile (herniated disc)
Estimated return: Late July
Maile injured his back during the Reds' 8-4 win over the Yankees on July 4 on a groundout in the sixth inning. Maile described the issue as a nerve hurting on the lower right side near his hip.

Manager David Bell indicated on July 5 that Maile will receive an injection in his back. Along with treatment and physical therapy, the hope is that Maile could return shortly after the All-Star break.

“He already had the injection that should clear it up,” Bell said. (Last updated: July 5)

60-DAY IL

2B Matt McLain (left shoulder surgery)
Expected return: Late August or early September
McLain will join the Reds in Atlanta on July 22 to begin more baseball activities, and he is scheduled to start a rehab assignment on August 12. The plan is for the second baseman to remain with the team throughout the rest of his treatment before the rehab assignment. (Last updated: July 20)

OF Nick Martini (left thumb sprain)
Estimated return: September
Martini, who had surgery on July 9 to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament inside his thumb, was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 13. Manager David Bell hoped that he could return this season, but noted it would likely be no earlier than September. Martini jammed his left thumb on a head-first slide on a failed stolen-base attempt in the second inning on July 6. (Last updated: July 13)

1B Christian Encarnacion-Strand (right hand fracture)
Expected return: Possibly postseason
Encarnacion-Strand underwent surgery on July 11 to repair ligament damage in his hand. His recovery is expected to take three months, making him unlikely to return during the regular season. He was diagnosed with a right ulnar styloid fracture on the inside of his hand near his wrist on May 8, and he also has ligament damage in the same area. (Last updated: July 12)

RHP Ian Gibaut (right forearm strain)
Expected return: Later in 2024
Gibaut, who started a throwing program at the team’s complex in Goodyear, Ariz., in late June, is scheduled to begin throwing off a mound in side bullpen sessions on July 16, with the goal of having him back by the middle of August. He underwent surgery on May 9 to relieve a compression in a forearm nerve -- called the anterior interosseous nerve, or AIN. (Last updated: July 10)

LHP Brandon Williamson (left shoulder strain)
Expected return: September
Williamson recently began a throwing program, and the Reds are targeting July 23 for the lefty to begin pitching from a mound in side bullpen sessions. If all goes well, Williamson could return to action in September. Williamson was diagnosed in June with a Bennett lesion in his shoulder. He opted against a season-ending surgery to repair it. After meeting with a specialist, though, he went the non-surgical route, and received injections on his left shoulder. (Last updated: July 10)

RHP Emilio Pagán (right lat strain)
Estimated return: Late July/early August
Pagán, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 27, began a throwing program on July 2 and said it has been going “really well.” He was stretched out to throwing from 75 feet on July 4. Pagán's progression is expected to take most of the month before he returns. (Last updated: July 4)

SS Edwin Arroyo (left shoulder surgery; No. 2 on Reds' top prospect list, No. 49 overall)
Estimated return:

RHP Tejay Antone (right elbow surgery)
Expected return:
2025
Antone was moved to the 60-day IL on April 19 after he had right elbow and arm surgery on April 12 that repaired tears in his ulnar collateral ligament and flexor mass tendon. It was performed in Cincinnati by team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Timothy Kremchek. Antone, 30, has a 2.47 ERA over 45 big league games since 2020. (Last updated: April 19)
