Marcelo Mayer is officially too hot for the South Atlantic League.
Baseball's No. 5 overall prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, has been promoted to Double-A Portland after tearing the cover off the ball with High-A Greenville. The news was reported first by the _Boston Globe_'s Alex Speier and confirmed by MLB.com's Ian Browne.
The fourth overall pick in the 2021 Draft compiled a slash line of .290/.366/.524 this year with the Drive and was named to the MLB Pipeline Team of the Week for the week of May 1.
After a slow start to the season, Mayer really picked up the pace this month. Through Sunday's games, the top Red Sox prospect leads the South Atlantic League in home runs (six) and RBIs (23) while trailing only No. 1 Orioles prospect Jackson Holliday (.663) in slugging (.641).
With nights like his first multihomer game on May 23, Mayer proved himself worthy of moving up to the next level. The slugging shortstop will join what is already a star-studded lineup. Eight of Boston's Top 30 prospects are currently with the Sea Dogs, including third-ranked Ceddanne Rafaela and No. 5 Nick Yorke.
