Rays reportedly eyeing Davidson for 2-way role

The Rays are known to operate in creative ways, and the next plan could involve adding a two-way player to their 2019 roster.
Late Saturday night, MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal reported that the Rays are looking into potentially signing former White Sox infielder Matt Davidson.
While it appears unorthodox, if the two sides come to an agreement, the move could make a lot of sense for the Rays.
Tampa Bay remains in the market for a right-handed hitter and could also benefit from adding an arm or two to its bullpen. Davidson won't necessarily fill the void in the bullpen, but he could add production against left-handed pitching.
In a surprise move this offseason, the White Sox decided to non-tender Davidson, making him a free agent. Davidson hit 20 home runs for Chicago in 2018 and finished with a .228 batting average. However, Davidson's numbers were much better against southpaws. In 131 plate appearances against left-handed pitching last season, the 27-year-old finished with five home runs and a .289/.382/.500 slash line. He mostly served as Chicago's designated hitter, but played 43 games at first base and 13 at third base.

Davidson has expressed interest in becoming a two-way player moving forward, but his pitching ability remains an unknown.
Davidson made just three appearances last season, all coming in lopsided losses. In three innings, Davidson didn't surrender a run, giving up one hit and striking out two. His fastball hovered around the low-90s, while he also displayed a breaking ball, which he used to strike out Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and Rangers infielder Rougned Odor.
The Rays drafted two-way player Brendan McKay with the No. 4 pick in the 2017 Draft.
