Rays prospect's wife, child killed in Virginia
The Tampa Bay Rays organization confirmed late Tuesday a tragedy involving pitching prospect Blake Bivens, whose wife and child were among three people killed in Virginia, according to multiple reports.
“Earlier today we learned that Blake Bivens, a pitcher with our Double-A affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits, suffered a terrible family tragedy in southern Virginia,” the Rays’ statement read. “Our hearts are broken for Blake. We are grieving with him and will support him any way we can. We ask that everyone respect the privacy of the Bivens family and the Biscuits family during this extremely difficult time.”
The brother of Bivens’ wife has been charged by police with first-degree homicide. The third victim is believed to be the mother of Bivens’ wife, according to a report from WSLS 10 News in Virginia.
The Biscuits canceled their doubleheader Tuesday night with the Chattanooga Lookouts.
