'Dawwgs,' BBQ highlight playoff concession offerings

ARLINGTON -- Globe Life Field is hosting its first home playoff game on Tuesday -- and the Rangers are beefing up their concession and merchandise options for the postseason.

Texas will introduce three new specialty food items, as well as an upgrade to Hurtado BBQ's brisket operation with a new smoker for the playoffs. The Rangers, in partnership with Delaware North, will also add new self-serve popcorn and cotton candy machines.

The final addition -- which the Rangers hope will get fans back in their seats quickly with games moving faster due to the new rules -- is a new retail store that utilizes Amazon’s RFID tags to allow fans to skip the checkout line. Instead, customers are charged when they walk out with merchandise. The “Just Walk Out” store is the first in an MLB ballpark to offer “autonomous commerce,” according to the club.

But the biggest news for Rangers fans and Texas barbecue is the new food options. Here’s what you can expect:

‘Oaxaca Dawwg’
Hurtado BBQ partnered with the club at the start of the 2023 season and became recognized for its birria tacos and beef ribs at the ballpark.

This new item is the creation of owner Brandon Hurtado, who unveiled the hot dog Monday that features Oaxaca sausage and is covered with pico and Oaxaca queso.

‘Super Slugger Cheese Sticks’
Delaware North general manager Casey Rapp described the cheese sticks as “gigantic … not the regular ones that you get at Applebee’s.” Each of the four cheese sticks is just smaller than your average hot dog.

‘Chicken Parm Dawwg’
Inspired by a popular ballpark item this season, a pizza “dawwg,” the chicken parm version features a chicken tender on top of a bun with mozzarella, pepperoni and sauce on top.

The Rangers will also debut a new smoker ordered from local barbecue equipment manufacturer M&M Barbecue -- full of baseball-themed shiny bells and whistles. It will be used by Hurtado BBQ beginning during Game 3 of the ALDS.

Arlington Eats, which features a rotating cast of local Arlington restaurants throughout the season, will host Cartel Tacos for the ALDS.

You can find Hurtado BBQ at section 141, Cartel Tacos and Arlington Eats at section 101 and the “Just Walk Out” store at section 116. The self-serve popcorn and cotton candy machines are located between the third base and home plate concourses.
