Puerto Rican Winter League set to begin Jan. 5

The Puerto Rican Winter League is scheduled to begin play on Jan. 5 following Hurricane Maria, which swept through the area from Sept. 16-Oct. 3 and caused significant destruction across the territory.
After the island's lengthy road to recovery, four teams will compete as part of the league's abbreviated 18-game schedule. The games will be conducted mostly during the day to limit the use of stadium lights in a place where many people still are living without power.
A number of Major Leaguers play winter ball in Puerto Rico to hone their skills during the offseason.
