Red Sox acquire catcher Danny Jansen from Toronto Blue Jays

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays, in exchange for minor league infielders Cutter Coffey and Eddinson Paulino, and minor league right-handed pitcher Gilberto Batista.

To make room for Jansen on the 40-Man Roster, the Red Sox designated right-handed pitcher Alex Speas for assignment.

Jansen, 29, has played in 470 Major League games, all with the Blue Jays (2018-24). Selected by Toronto in the 16th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the right-handed hitter has batted .222 (314-for-1,413) with 71 home runs and a .733 OPS in his career, making 383 starts at catcher and 18 as the designated hitter. In 61 games this season, Jansen has hit .212 (42-for-198) with 13 doubles, six home runs, and a .672 OPS.

Coffey, 20, has played in 61 games this season for High-A Salem, batting .238 (57-for-240) with 14 home runs and 46 RBI while making 31 starts at third base, 21 at shortstop, seven as the designated hitter, and two at second base. The right-handed hitter was selected by Boston in the second round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft.

Paulino, 22, was ranked by Baseball America as the Red Sox’ No. 18 prospect. In 69 games this season with Double-A Portland, the left-handed hitter has batted .263 (64-for-243) while making 34 starts at third base, 20 at second base, 11 at shortstop, and one as the designated hitter. A native of the Dominican Republic, he was signed by the Red Sox on July 2, 2018.

Batista, 19, signed with the Red Sox in November 2022. In 19 career games (14 starts) between the Dominican Summer League (2023) and Florida Complex League (2024), he has gone 1-6 with a 3.67 ERA (25 ER/61.1 IP).

Speas, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros on June 29. In four games with Triple-A Worcester, he allowed six runs in 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and eight walks.
