Ed Sanicki hit a three-run homer the first time he stepped into a Major League batter’s box. After entering as a defensive replacement in right field in the seventh inning, Sanicki came to bat for the first time in the ninth inning and homered off the legendary Rip Sewell at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. It capped the Phillies' scoring in a 12-4 win before 3,920 spectators.

Richie Ashburn breaks the club record for career hits (2,211) with a seventh-inning single off the first-base bag in a 9-3 loss to the Milwaukee Braves at Connie Mack Stadium. In the fastest game ever played in the Major Leagues, it takes the New York Giants 51 minutes to beat the Phillies, 6-1, at the Polo Grounds. Most batters swung at the first pitch and ran the bases at will. This happened in the first game of a season-ending doubleheader. The Giants also won that game, 7-1. Box score in baseball-reference.com doesn't list a time of game for this one.

Pete Rose ends his first season with the Phillies with a big final month. He finishes with a .421 September, collecting 51 hits in 29 games; final average, .331. That’s the most September hits since OF Lefty O’Doul had 55 in 28 games in 1929 when he won the batting title (.398).

He threw three scoreless innings and was followed with similar efforts by Chad Durbin, Scott Eyre and Brad Lidge. Jimmy Rollins had a double and triple, Raul Ibanez a home run (No. 34).
