Phillies place Jeanmar on DL, recall Kelly

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies sent Jeanmar Gómez to the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday with a right elbow impingement and recalled utility man Ty Kelly from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill the vacant spot on the 25-man roster. Kelly will be available Tuesday night against the Mariners.
Gomez began the season as the Phillies' closer, but he quickly lost the job. He's 2-1 with a 7.94 ERA in nine games this season.
"He said he felt it when he threw in Chicago in his second inning [on Thursday]," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.
Kelly was last seen turning a double play for the Phillies as a fifth infielder in a late-game, bases-loaded situation that same day in Chicago. He'll provide support for a shortened bench.
Nola progressing
Aaron Nola has been sidelined since April 20 with lower back pain, and he will make his first rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He is scheduled to throw around 60 pitches, and he will return to Philadelphia to be reevaluated before likely making a second rehab start.

"If he can get up to 80 pitches and he's fine, then he'll probably come back then," Mackanin said regarding a second rehab appearance if Nola's Thursday evaluation goes well.
Phillies make a deal
Philadelphia acquired right-handed relief pitcher Casey Fien for cash considerations from the Seattle Mariners before sending him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.
Fien will serve as organizational depth for the Phillies. He's thrown 283 innings in relief since 2009, including three consecutive seasons with a sub-4.00 ERA and at least 60 innings for the Twins from 2013-15. Since then, he's thrown 45 1/3 innings with a 6.75 ERA, 41 strikeouts and 14 walks.
Altherr making a statement
It's hard to imagine a player capitalizing on an opportunity better than how Aaron Altherr has excelled in the absence of outfielder Howie Kendrick.
Since April 15 when Kendrick was sidelined, Altherr ranks as one of the 20 best offensive weapons in the game with a 1.071 OPS. 
Has Altherr done enough to win a full-time spot in the lineup when Kendrick returns?
"Well, if I had to make that decision now, based on, what, 60 at-bats, I'd say yes," Mackanin said. "But as far as down the road, for me, he needs to sustain what he's doing now. I see no reason why he won't with the shorter swing he's come up with."
