Phils award $550,000 in grants to heroes

The need for a helping hand is greater than ever, and in honor of the season of giving, Phillies Charities, Inc. is recognizing 39 nonprofit organizations who continually step up to the plate to provide vital resources to those in need. Each of these community heroes will be honored during the Phillies Charities Holiday Night of Giving, a virtual event with special guests, including manager Joe Girardi and the Phillie Phanatic, among others.

The organizations being recognized are also recipients of a recent Phillies Charities, Inc. grant, with more than $550,000 in grants awarded this year, thanks to fan support of various fundraisers, including the Phantastic Auction, Phillies Game Face Fan Photo Cutouts, Phandemic Krew bobble heads and T-shirts, and more.

The spirit of giving is not just a seasonal event for these extraordinary heroes, said Phillies Charities, Inc. president John Weber. From food security to mental health services and more, the services that these organizations provide to the community are more important than ever. It is our hope that these grants will allow our heroes to continue to make a difference to those who need it most, all year long.

• ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter: Aims to discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest.
• Animal House Project: A pet shelter and mobile food pantry for animals whose families cannot afford basic pet care, including cancer/ALS patients, military, seniors and those in crisis.
• ARTZ Philadelphia: Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and well-being of people living with dementia and their care partners through joyful interactions around arts and culture.
• As I Plant This Seed: Promotes development and community advancement by providing access to education and training to underprivileged youth while treating trauma, juvenile delinquency and at-risk behaviors within an urban context.
• Bethel Chapel Church of Philadelphia: Serves children and teens through a Friday night youth group which provides games, songs, mentoring and teaching to give kids safety, purpose and direction.
• Bethesda Project: Provides shelter, housing and supportive services to adults experiencing chronic homelessness in Philadelphia.
• Bucks County Opportunity Council, Inc.: On a mission to reduce poverty through an Emergency Services Program providing counseling, housing and utility assistance to promote economic self-sufficiency.
• City of Philadelphia's 2020 Playstreets Program: Provides a safe, fun place for Philadelphia's children to play each summer.
• Coded By Kids: Provides project-based mentorship to equip underserved youth with skills needed to succeed in tech-driven world.
• Covenant House, Pennsylvania: Provides shelter and an array of services for homeless young people, including a first-class clinic, staff to help with going to college and finding a job, and one-to-one support to help young people plan, stay on track and achieve their goals.
• Cradles To Crayons, Inc.: Serves kids and families all year long as young children outgrow essentials like clothes, toys and books quickly.
• The Darren Daulton Foundation: Provides financial assistance to those who suffer from malignant primary brain tumors.
• Dottie's House, Inc.: A long-term residential program in fully furnished apartments with weekly case management, supportive counseling, domestic violence groups and therapeutic art classes for children.
• The Food Trust: Ensures access to affordable, nutritious food and information to make healthy decisions.

• Four Diamonds Fund: Aims to conquer childhood cancer by assisting children and their families through superior care, comprehensive support and innovative research.
• Frances Harper Project: A coalition of 50 organizations and 90 individuals to expand awareness of and appreciation for African American Patriots of the 19th Century through civic dialogue, workshops, education, commemorations, publications, preservation and conservation of African American hallowed ground, scholarship and new thinking through anchor partnership with AAMP (fiscal agent) Eden Cemetery, and Charles Blockson Collection of Temple University.

• Freedom Neighborhood One: Community-based program whose primary goal is to prevent, control and reduce violent crime, drug abuse and gang-related activities by providing a variety of youth, young adult and family programing.
• Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger: Connects people with food assistance programs and nutrition education; provides resources to a network of food pantries; and educates the public and policymakers about responsible solutions that prevent people from going hungry.
• HAVEN Women: A transitional housing program that provides a safe haven for female veterans to start over and become productive members of the community.
• Healthy NewsWorks: Empowers elementary and middle school students to become researchers, writers, critical thinkers and confident communicators through a classroom-based health journalism program where students write and produce materials about timely health issues.
• Interfaith Hospitality Network of the Main Line: Provides compassionate, temporary shelter for homeless families as well as programs and services connecting families to resources, empowering them to achieve and maintain affordable housing.
• Kingdom Keepers Outreach Ministries: Community-based organization serving meals, providing clothing and footwear, education and other services while maintaining a sense of dignity to all those we serve.
• Kisses For Kyle Foundation: Assists families whose children ages 0-21 are battling cancer through 20+ programs, special opportunities and events.
• Louis T. Savino III Foundation: Dedicated to increasing awareness and prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in youth.
• Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, Jefferson Hospitals head and neck cancer program: Dedicated to the care of patients with head and neck cancers.
• Manna on Main Street: Committed to ending hunger in the North Penn region by providing food, fulfilling social service and education needs and conducting community outreach.

• Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard, Inc.: Provides food, clothing, employment assistance/job help/resume building, medical referrals, housing referrals and emergency financial assistance for individuals and families in need.
• Muscular Dystrophy Association Greater Philadelphia: Helps transform the lives of people with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related neuromuscular diseases.
• Philabundance: Seeks to drive hunger from our communities today and end hunger forever.
• Philadelphia Futures: Makes a profound difference in the lives of thousands of students through the power of education.
• The Police Athletic League of Philadelphia (Ford PAL): Serves hundreds of kids and teens in South Philadelphia and is located in a targeted high-crime area.
• Pride Ventures, Inc.: Provides job training and transitional employment experience to individuals with developmental disabilities who could not independently succeed in a traditional work environment.
• Rebuilding Together Philadelphia: Repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
• The Richie Ashburn-Harry Kalas Foundation: Provides free baseball camps in the Philadelphia area for 1,000 children each summer.
• St. Francis Inn Ministries: Provides dine-in meals for the homeless, food baskets for families and homebound seniors monthly. Mail services, phone usage and many intangible resources also support their guests.
• Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission: Serves those experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia.
• Tug McGraw Foundation: Improving the quality of life for those affected by brain-related trauma and tumors through education, resources and brain wellness programs.
• Turning Points for Children: Serves thousands of vulnerable children and families through a continuum of care.
• Unlock The Light: Dedicated to unlocking the students' light by providing resources for those struggling with depression, self-injury and suicide.
