Phillies anniversaries in June
Looking back at anniversary moments and record performances ranging from 1919 to 2009, there’s a mixture of names who appear ... Dick Allen, Andy Seminick, Steve Jeltz, Grover Cleveland Alexander and Eddie Waitkus.
June 1, 1969
In a 12-4 loss to Los Angeles at Connie Mack Stadium, 1B Dick Allen slams a home run in his fifth consecutive game to set a club record. The five homers were part of a run in which he hit nine in 14 games.
June 1, 1939
The Phillies play their first night game at home and lose, 5-2, to Pittsburgh at Shibe Park before 8,000. Time of game: 1:55.
June 2, 1949
The Phillies hit a club-record five home runs in the eighth inning of a 12-3 win over Cincinnati at Shibe Park. C Andy Seminick hits two (three for the game) in the 10-run inning, while LF Del Ennis, 3B Willie Jones and RHP Schoolboy Rowe hit one each. June 8, 1989
SS Steve Jeltz becomes the first Phillie to homer from each side of the plate in a game, a 15-11 win over Pittsburgh, one of the wildest games in Vet history. The Pirates score 10 runs in the first inning but the Phillies battle back to win on a five-run eighth inning. Pittsburgh broadcaster Jim Rooker boasts early in the game, “If the Pirates lose this game, I’ll walk back to Pittsburgh.” Rooker keeps his word, walking from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh in the fall and raising money for charity in the process.
June 12, 1939
Grover Cleveland Alexander is among the first group of players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
June 14, 1949
1B Eddie Waitkus, in his first year with the Phillies, is shot by 19-year-old Ruth Steinhagen in a Chicago hotel room. Critically injured, Waitkus misses the rest of the season, but recovers in time to help the Whiz Kids in 1950.
June 18, 1989
Following the Phillies' 6-5 win over New York, GM Lee Thomas pulls off two major trades, sending 2B Juan Samuel to the Mets for CF Lenny Dykstra, RHP Roger McDowell and a Minor Leaguer, and sending RHP Steve Bedrosian to San Francisco for LHP Terry Mulholland, LHP Dennis Cook and 3B Charlie Hayes.
