Alonso avoids worst after HBP, comes through in pinch vs. D-backs

NEW YORK -- A day after getting hit with a pitch on his right hand against the Dodgers, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso learned Thursday that he escaped serious injury.

Alonso underwent X-rays, a CT scan and a bone scan, and the results were negative. He was able to do fielding drills at Citi Field on Thursday afternoon and took some swings later in the day. Alonso entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning of the Mets' 3-2 win over the D-backs Thursday night and doubled down the left-field line against left-hander Joe Mantiply before scoring on Francisco Lindor's RBI single to tie the game at 2.

“I was really happy with how everything responded in a short matter of time,” Alonso said. “… I was happy I was able to impact the game in a positive manner tonight, as well.”

Alonso departed Wednesday's 10-3 loss to the Dodgers in the first inning after James Paxton hit him with a 93 mph fastball. Alonso was pinch-run for by Brett Baty, who subsequently shifted to third base, with Mark Vientos moving from third to first.

“I really feel I got lucky and dodged a bullet,” Alonso said. “I’m really happy that it’s going to be day to day. I feel very fortunate and I feel blessed for sure. … Throwing, fielding feels completely normal, which is awesome. … I pretty much have the blessing to do my normal routine. I want to take care of everything as much as possible. I don’t want to aggravate it too much. Everything I’ve done so far feels normal. I expect the same when I go about my cage work. Everything feels great.”

In 56 games this season, Alonso is hitting .235 with 26 RBIs and a team-leading 12 home runs.
