Welke Classic gives glimpse at Padres' future
SAN DIEGO -- The Padres' future was on display this week, where a handful of top prospects took part in the fourth annual On Deck Game against the Rangers at Petco Park.
The event has been dubbed the “Don Welke On Deck Classic” after the late scouting legend who passed away last September, and it has evolved into a three-game series with the final game available to the public and the media.

The two clubs split the first two games of the Welke Classic, and the Padres jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the rubber match. But the Rangers grabbed a late lead on Heriberto Hernandez’s inside-the-park grand slam, and they pulled away for a 10-2 victory.
Here's a look at three standout Padres performers from Tuesday night:
Reggie Lawson, RHP
A high-upside right-hander, Lawson has endured an up-and-down tenure in the Padres' system. Despite his injuries and inconsistencies, the club remains sold on his potential, and it's easy to see why.
Lawson started Tuesday night and threw four scoreless frames, mixing a mid-90s fastball with two tricky offspeed pitches. The Padres' No. 21 prospect struck out three and allowed three hits.
Taylor Trammell, CF
Trammell's Petco Park debut was an impressive one. Acquired from the Reds in the Franmil Reyes deal at the Trade Deadline, Trammell wasted no time acclimating himself. Rangers prospect Osleivis Basabe led off the game with a single to center field, but Trammell ranged and cut it off before uncorking a laser to second to nab a greedy Basabe. Trammell would tack on a single during the Padres' two-run fourth.
Trammell authored a strong finish to the 2019 season at Double-A Amarillo. He batted .310/.356/.643 during the postseason, including the go-ahead grand slam in the decisive Game 5 of the Texas League championship. Trammell will be invited to big league camp next spring, with the hope to make an impact at Petco Park next summer.
"This is going to be something that I'm going to work toward for the offseason and Spring Training," Trammell said of his first visit to San Diego. "I'm very excited that I'm here. ... It's been a great opportunity."
Xavier Edwards, 2B/SS
Edwards, the Padres' No. 5 prospect, batted .322/.375/.396 between Class A and Class A Advanced this season. He blends an advanced plate approach with elite athleticism, and it was all on display Tuesday night.
Edwards led off the game with a single, then he walked and stole a base in the fourth. Defensively, he moved between second base and shortstop from inning to inning. He will continue to play both spots in the San Diego system.
Other noteworthy performances
• Ryan Weathers, the Padres' 2018 first-round pick, worked a scoreless fifth and sixth innings, striking out two.
• Luis Campusano, the team's top catching prospect, threw out two would-be Rangers basestealers.
• Righty relief prospect Dauris Valdez pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two.
