Torres placed on MLB's restricted list

SAN DIEGO -- Padres reliever José Torres has been placed on Major League Baseball's restricted list and will not be in camp Wednesday when pitchers and catchers are slated to report to Spring Training.
Torres reportedly is facing allegations of domestic violence. He was arrested in December, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
""We are aware of the allegations involving Jose Torres, and he will not be reporting to Spring Training," the Padres said in a statement released on Tuesday. "We take this matter very seriously and are fully cooperating with the investigation being conducted by the Commissioner's Office. We will not have any further comment at this time."
The 24-year-old left-hander was set to compete for a place in a crowded San Diego bullpen. Instead, his absence leaves a place open on the club's 40-man roster.
In his rookie season last year, Torres posted a 4.21 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings. He finished the season strong with a 1.96 ERA in 17 outings over the final two months.
That appeared to set Torres up as a prime contender for one of the two or three remaining places available in the bullpen. Entering camp, the club has essentially solidified four relief roles with Brad Hand, Craig Stammen, Kirby Yates and Kazuhisa Makita. Phil Maton is considered a favorite for the fifth spot.
Torres would have competed with Buddy Baumann, Carter Capps, Kyle McGrath and Colten Brewer -- among a handful of others -- for the remaining jobs.
